About Clontarf Reserve

Clontarf Reserve is a northern beaches institution for family weekends, and the aquatic-themed playground is a big reason why. Play equipment themed around ocean life — sea creatures, boats, and underwater motifs — sits right alongside one of Sydney's most inviting harbour beaches. The aquatic theming connects naturally to the setting, so kids transition seamlessly between playing on the "ocean" equipment and splashing in the actual ocean.

The playground has climbing structures, swings, slides, and a sand play area, all with the marine theme woven through. The equipment is well-maintained and suits the toddler to 8-year-old range well. It's not a huge playground, but it doesn't need to be — the beach is the main attraction, and the playground is the support act that keeps kids busy when they're not swimming.

Clontarf Beach is sheltered, calm, and shallow — genuinely one of the best harbour beaches in Sydney for small children. The water is enclosed by a netted swimming area, and the gentle slope means toddlers can paddle safely in ankle-deep water while older kids swim further out. The reserve has an expansive grassy picnic area under massive Norfolk pines and fig trees, which means natural shade is excellent.

BBQ facilities (the free electric type) are very popular — arrive early to secure one, or bring a portable setup. There's a kiosk/cafe at the reserve that serves decent food. Toilets and change rooms are available. Parking is free but the car park fills fast on sunny weekends — aim for before 9am in summer. Bus routes from Manly service the area. This is the complete package: playground, swimming, BBQ, shade, and cafe, all in a stunning harbour setting.
