About Deerbush Park

Deerbush Park holds a special place in Sydney's playground history — it was the city's first all-abilities playground, setting the standard that many others have since followed. The $6.4 million investment is evident in every detail, from the Liberty Swing (designed for wheelchair users) to the flush-level surfaces, accessible roundabouts, and equipment with transfer platforms at every level.

What makes Deerbush Park significant beyond its historical first status is that it genuinely works as a destination playground for all families, not just those with accessibility needs. The play equipment is varied and exciting: climbing towers, slides, swings of multiple types, sensory panels, musical instruments, and a flying fox. The Liberty Swing is the emotional centrepiece — watching a child in a wheelchair experience the joy of swinging is something that stays with you.

The park has been designed with sightlines in mind, so parents can sit in one spot and see most of the play area. There's extensive shade from both mature trees and shade sails, which is crucial in western Sydney's brutal summers. BBQ facilities, covered picnic areas, and clean toilets with accessible cubicles and adult change tables are all available.

Parking is free in the dedicated car park and generally adequate. The surrounding Wakeley area is residential, so there's no nearby cafe — bring your own food and drinks. Bus routes service the area but it's primarily a drive-to destination. Fairfield Council maintains the park well, and the community clearly takes pride in it. This is a playground that changed what Sydney expected from its public play spaces.
