Freshwater Beach Reserve Playground

Freshwater Beach Reserve Playground was completely rebuilt in 2024 with a marine theme that perfectly suits its beachside setting. The design references local sea life — play structures shaped like marine creatures, wave-form climbing elements, and ocean-blue colour schemes that blend with the beach environment. It's a thoughtful upgrade that connects the playground to its coastal context rather than just dropping generic equipment next to the sand.

The playground is divided into zones for different ages, with toddler-friendly equipment near the grassy foreshore and more challenging climbing and balancing structures for older kids. There's a sand play area (which somewhat amusingly sits 50 metres from an entire beach of sand), swings, slides, and rope climbing elements. The equipment is brand new as of 2024 and in immaculate condition.

The trump card here is the beach access. Freshwater Beach is right there — literally steps from the playground. So the afternoon routine is: playground first, beach second, fish and chips from the surf club to finish. The Freshwater surf club and several cafes on The Esplanade provide food and drink options. Toilets and change rooms are in the reserve.

Parking along The Esplanade is competitive, especially on sunny weekends and in summer — arrive early or consider the car park on Lawrence Street. Bus 139 from Manly Wharf services Freshwater well. The coastal walk between Freshwater and Manly is one of Sydney's best and starts right here. The playground is not fenced and there's no shade structure — the trade-off for the ocean views. Bring sunscreen, swimmers, and towels.
