About Prince Alfred Park Playground

The yellow balloon climbing structure at Prince Alfred Park is one of those instantly recognisable playground landmarks. Sitting at the Surry Hills end of the park, right next to the excellent Prince Alfred Park Pool, this playground makes the most of its central location and distinctive design. The balloon structure provides climbing fun for younger kids — rope nets, platforms, and a slide — all wrapped in a cheerful yellow shell that kids spot from blocks away.

The rest of the playground includes swings, a small sand area, balancing elements, and equipment suited to the 2-8 age range. It's not a huge playground, but it doesn't need to be — the adjacent pool is the real companion attraction, and most families combine a playground visit with a swim. The pool is one of Sydney's best outdoor pools, with a separate wading area for little ones.

The park itself is a lovely green space in the middle of dense Surry Hills, with a grassy oval, mature trees, and walking paths. It's a lifeline for local families in an area with limited private gardens. The playground is not fenced, but it's set within the larger park away from roads.

Central station is literally across the street on Chalmers Street — you cannot get better public transport access for a playground. There are dozens of excellent cafes and restaurants within a few minutes' walk in any direction. Street parking is near-impossible, so take the train or walk. Toilets are available in the pool complex when it's open, and there are public toilets in the park. This is the definition of a neighbourhood playground done well.
