Free Kids Activities in Sydney
You do not need to spend a cent to have an incredible family day out in Sydney. Here are the best free activities, from world-class playgrounds to beaches, museums, and community events.
I added up what we spent on kids activities last month and nearly fell off my chair. Play centres, trampoline parks, zoo entry, cafe lunches — it was over $400. So I challenged myself to find free alternatives that are actually good, not just “free but boring.” Turns out Sydney is ridiculously generous when it comes to free family stuff. Here are the ones we keep going back to.
Playgrounds Worth Driving To (They're Free!)
Sydney's playgrounds have had a massive upgrade in recent years, and some of them honestly rival paid play centres. These are the ones we drive to on purpose.
Blaxland Riverside Park (Olympic Park)
The best free playground in Sydney. Three hectares of equipment including a 12-metre treehouse, double flying foxes, tunnel slides, and the largest outdoor water play area in NSW. We easily spend 3-4 hours here. The catch: almost no shade on the main equipment (the toddler area has shade cloth, everything else is full sun). Bring hats, sunscreen, and a pop-up shade if you have one. Parking is free but limited — the P5 carpark off Hill Road is $4/hour if the free spots are taken. Check the Olympic Park events calendar before you go because event days spike parking to $25. Free BBQ facilities and the Armory Wharf Cafe nearby for when you can't be bothered cooking.
Darling Quarter Playground (CBD)
My kids call this “the slide playground.” The 8-metre giant slide and 21-metre flying fox are the stars, but the sand diggers are what keeps my younger one occupied for hours. Bring towels and a full change of clothes — the water play area means they will be soaked. The secret trick: visit on a Friday or Saturday evening for the visitor-controlled light shows that barely anyone knows about. Parking is painful on weekdays ($56 for 3 hours!) but the weekend flat rate is $15, or just take the train to Town Hall.
Livvi's Place (Ryde and Five Dock)
Beautiful inclusive playgrounds where kids of all abilities play together. Smaller than the big two above but thoughtfully designed and never feels overcrowded. Pirrama Park in Pyrmont is another great free option with water jets and harbour views.
Beaches With Calm Water for Little Kids
Every beach in Sydney is free, and for families with little ones the harbour beaches are where it's at — calmer water, gentle slopes, and a more relaxed vibe. Here are our favourites.
Balmoral Beach
This is our number one family beach. Netted swimming area, a gentle slope into the water that toddlers love, grassy picnic spots with shade. My two-year-old could paddle in the shallows for hours. Get there early on weekends for parking — by 10am on a sunny Saturday it's a battle.
Clontarf Beach
Even calmer than Balmoral and with a playground right on the sand. There are free BBQ facilities too, so we sometimes do a whole morning-to-afternoon thing here. Feels like a proper family day out for literally zero dollars.
Shelly Beach (Manly)
Take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly (the ride itself is entertainment), then walk to Shelly Beach. Crystal-clear water, you can see blue groper and fish just by standing in the shallows. Bring a snorkel for older kids. The only cost is the Opal card fare — kids under 4 travel free.
Free Museum Days and Library Sessions
The Australian Museumis free for under 16s. The dinosaur gallery is the main draw — my son would live there if I let him. We go at least twice a year and it's still exciting every time. Good for about 2-3 hours with younger kids.
The Art Gallery of NSW is free general admission and they run free kids activity trails on weekends — just pick up a trail sheet at the front desk. The MCA at Circular Quay is also free and does free family Sundays with drop-in art activities. The Royal Botanic Garden is free and my kids go wild for the cockatoos and water dragon lizards on the paths. Free guided walks at 10:30am daily.
Libraries are the free activity I wish I'd discovered sooner. Baby rhyme time, preschool storytime, LEGO clubs, coding workshops — all free, all excellent. Surry Hills, Lane Cove, and Randwick libraries are particularly good. During school holidays they run daily programs. Check your council website for schedules. Community Events Most Parents Don't Know About
Your local council probably runs way more free family events than you realise. I didn't know about half of these until I actually followed my council on Instagram:
Free outdoor cinema runs in summer across Parramatta, North Sydney, Bondi, and Burwood. BYO blanket and snacks. We went to the one in Parramatta last January and the kids thought it was the greatest thing ever.
Vivid Sydney (late May to June) has free light installations across the CBD, Barangaroo, and Chatswood. It goes late but we take the kids to the early showing and they are mesmerised. Chinese New Year in the CBD and NAIDOC Week events are also free and family-friendly.
Seriously, follow your local council on social media. It takes 30 seconds and you will find out about things you never knew existed. Many free events do require registration though (still free, just capped). For more ideas, see our complete guide to things to do with kids in Sydney.
Free Water Play Spots for Summer
When it's 35 degrees and you don't want to deal with beach parking, these free water play areas are lifesavers. Darling Quarter Playground has a fantastic water play section. Blaxland Riverside Park's water play area is the largest outdoor one in NSW (open 10am-4pm in winter, 10am-5pm in summer — don't arrive at 3pm expecting a long play).
Pirrama Park in Pyrmont has harbour-side water jets with stunning views. The Ian Potter Children's WILD PLAY Garden in Centennial Park has water channels, bamboo tunnels, and textured surfaces — it is magical for toddlers and completely free. Many council parks have splash pads that run from October to April.
The golden rule: always bring a towel and spare clothes. Always. I cannot tell you how many times I've driven home with a wet, shivering child wrapped in my jacket because I forgot. Browse outdoor activities on KidsPlaySpace for more options near you.
