School Holidays in Sydney — Activities, Dates & Programs for Kids
School holidays in Sydney can go one of two ways: you plan ahead and have a brilliant time, or you wake up on day one with three kids staring at you and no idea what to do. We've been on both sides, and planning ahead wins every time.
NSW school holidays in 2026 fall across four breaks: autumn holidays from 7 to 17 April (which overlaps with the Royal Easter Show running 2 to 13 April), winter holidays from 6 to 17 July, spring holidays from 28 September to 9 October, and the long summer break from 18 December 2026 through to 27 January 2027. Staff development days at the start of each term often add an extra day or two — check your school's specific calendar.
The honest truth about school holidays in Sydney: popular activities book out fast, prices go up at some venues, and anywhere indoors on a rainy day will be packed. Our strategy is to book the big-ticket items (vacation care, zoo programs, workshops) at least 2-3 weeks before holidays start, mix in free activities (museums, beaches, playgrounds, library programs) to keep costs manageable, and save indoor play centres and trampoline parks for wet weather backup days rather than planning them in advance.
For working parents, vacation care is the practical backbone of school holidays. Daily rates in Sydney run $65 to $142 before subsidy, but the Child Care Subsidy covers up to 90 per cent for families earning under $83,000 — and from January 2026, the new 3-Day Guarantee means every eligible family gets at least 72 hours of subsidised care per fortnight regardless of activity test. YMCA NSW operates 30-plus vacation care sites across Sydney, and most councils run their own programs.
This page covers every school holiday date, our favourite activities by category and budget, vacation care options, and practical tips from parents who've survived more school holidays than we can count.
1. NSW School Holiday Dates 2026 — Full Calendar
Every NSW public school follows the same term dates set by the Department of Education. Catholic and independent schools may vary by a few days, so always check your specific school's calendar.
Term 1 runs from 28 January to 2 April 2026, with the autumn holidays from 7 to 17 April. This break overlaps with the Royal Easter Show (2-13 April at Sydney Olympic Park) and Easter itself, making it one of the busiest holiday periods for family activities in Sydney. Book anything popular at least 3 weeks ahead.
Term 2 runs from 21 April to 3 July 2026, with winter holidays from 6 to 17 July. Winter holidays are great for indoor activities — trampoline parks, play centres, museums, and creative workshops. Outdoor playgrounds are still usable on sunny winter days (Sydney winter days average 17 degrees Celsius) but water play is closed at most parks.
Term 3 runs from 20 July to 25 September 2026, with spring holidays from 28 September to 9 October. Spring is ideal for outdoor activities — the weather is warming up, water play restarts at most playgrounds in September, and it's before the crowds of summer. This is our favourite holiday period for destination playgrounds and bushwalks.
Term 4 runs from 13 October to 17 December 2026, with the long summer break from 18 December 2026 to 27 January 2027. Summer holidays are the longest break and the most expensive if you're relying on vacation care or paid activities. Mix free activities (beaches, playgrounds, library programs) with one or two big-ticket experiences per week to keep costs manageable.
Staff development days are typically scheduled for the first day of Terms 1 and 3 and the last day of Term 4. These add an extra day to the holiday break for students but are set by individual schools, so check your school's published calendar.

2. Best School Holiday Activities by Budget
School holidays in Sydney can cost a fortune or almost nothing — it depends entirely on how you plan.
Free activities that are genuinely good: destination playgrounds with water play (Blaxland Riverside Park, Darling Quarter, Bungarribee Park — all free entry, free water play, free BBQs), the Australian Museum in the CBD (free general entry plus free drop-in holiday activities), the Museum of Contemporary Art at Circular Quay (free entry for all ages), the Art Gallery of NSW (free kids trails and audio tours), Darling Harbour's school holiday program (free disco, yoga, and ninja course at the playground), City of Parramatta holiday programs (NSW's largest free council program), and every public library in Sydney runs free holiday activities — storytime, craft sessions, coding workshops, and LEGO clubs.
Under $25 per child: Flip Out trampoline parks from $10 per hour on Mondays, Vitaland Kids Cafe from $4.80, Monkey Mania from $14.50, Sky Zone from $18 per hour, City of Sydney swimming lessons at $21 per week across five aquatic centres, and 9 Degrees indoor bouldering at $25 for a day pass. Many activity providers accept the NSW Active and Creative Kids vouchers — that's two $50 vouchers per eligible child per year ($100 total) that can be used at registered swimming schools, dance studios, gymnastics clubs, coding programs, and art classes.
$25 to $60 per child: BOUNCE Homebush from $22.50 per hour (the X-Park ninja course is included), Sydney Zoo from $25 per child, SEA LIFE Aquarium from $24 online, Taronga Zoo from $29.70 online, cooking classes at Salt Meats Cheese from $60 for ages 6-12, and ceramics painting at Tennyson Studio Gladesville.
Over $60 per child: Taronga Zoo Adventures day program at $75 per day (ages 5-11 — books out fast), Junior Science Academy at Macquarie University at $142 per day (note: not CCS-eligible), Treetops Adventure Park, and private surf lessons. These premium experiences are great as one-off holiday highlights but not sustainable for every day of a two-week break.

3. Vacation Care — What Parents Need to Know
For working parents, vacation care is the practical foundation of school holidays. Here's what you need to know about finding, booking, and paying for it in Sydney.
Vacation care programs run during school holidays at approved childcare centres, community halls, schools, and recreation facilities. Children typically attend 8am to 6pm with activities ranging from excursions (movies, bowling, water parks) to on-site programs (arts and crafts, cooking, sports). YMCA NSW is the largest provider with over 30 sites across Sydney. Most local councils operate their own programs — City of Parramatta is the biggest free council program in the state. Private providers include Camp Australia, OSHClub, and various independent centres.
Costs range from $65 to $142 per day before the Child Care Subsidy. Council-run programs sit at the lower end ($65-$85), YMCA and major providers charge $75-$95, and specialist programs (science camps, sports academies) run $100-$142. The Child Care Subsidy makes a massive difference: families earning under $83,000 receive up to 90 per cent subsidy, meaning a $90 day could cost as little as $9. Families earning $100,000-$130,000 typically receive 60-80 per cent subsidy.
The new 3-Day Guarantee from January 2026 is significant for casual and part-time workers. Previously, your CCS hours were tied to your work activity test — if you didn't work enough hours, you got fewer subsidised hours. Now, every eligible family is guaranteed at least 72 subsidised hours per fortnight (roughly 3 days per week), regardless of how much you work. This is especially helpful during school holidays when you might need more care than your usual arrangement.
Booking tips: register with your preferred provider well before holidays start. Popular vacation care spots (especially YMCA and council programs) fill up 3-4 weeks before the break. Most providers offer single-day bookings so you don't need to commit to the full two weeks. Check whether your chosen program is CCS-approved before booking — not all are, and the cost difference is enormous.
