About Bonna Point Reserve Adventure Playground

We drove out to Bonna Point Reserve in Kurnell on a sunny weekend morning and the combination of the premium adventure playground, coastal bushland setting, and sweeping Botany Bay views made it one of the most memorable playground outings we have had anywhere in Sydney. This impressive $1.2 million playground features the tallest slide in the entire Sutherland Shire, and the innovative Sky-pods design creates an elevated play experience you simply cannot find at a typical suburban park.

The centrepiece Sky-pods consist of two elevated pods accessed by a ladder or a challenging rope net climbing tower, with the pods connected at height by rope tunnels that sway gently as children traverse between them. The tallest pod launches children down a 4.5-metre enclosed slide — the highest in any Shire playground and tall enough to deliver a genuine thrill that had our kids whooping with excitement and rushing back to the climbing tower for another go. Dual slides run from the other pod at varying heights for children who want a less intense experience or are still building their confidence with heights. A large rope climbing structure provides multiple challenging ascent routes to the elevated platforms, creating a satisfying climb-and-slide circuit that our children repeated endlessly throughout the morning.

A dual flying fox allows two children to race simultaneously — always a crowd favourite that generates friendly competition between siblings and friends while cutting down the frustrating wait times common at single flying fox installations. An innovative multi-swing facility offers several different swing types in one combined installation, catering to toddlers through to older children swinging side by side rather than competing for turns on a single set. The swings were thoughtfully designed so that different ages and abilities use the same space together naturally, which is lovely to watch.

A separate toddler play unit provides age-appropriate equipment specifically for children under 5, with lower heights, softer materials, and gentle slides that build confidence without overwhelming smaller visitors. This thoughtful separation means families with children of different ages can spread out across the playground while still keeping everyone within the same general area and maintaining clear sightlines between the zones.

Adjoining the main playground is the Skate Alley — a plaza-style concrete skate park featuring box grinds, rails, and ramps suitable for riders from beginners through to advanced levels. A scooter path circuit loops around the broader area, extending the active play options well beyond the main playground equipment. These additions make Bonna Point a genuine destination for older children and teenagers as well as younger visitors, and the skate area was busy with enthusiastic scooter riders of all ages when we visited.

The playground is set within the broader Bonna Point Reserve on the scenic Kurnell peninsula, with views stretching across Botany Bay to the city skyline on clear days. Silver Beach is directly accessible from the reserve, providing natural sand and water play after children have finished with the playground equipment. Bushwalking trails along the picturesque foreshore connect to the Kamay Botany Bay National Park and the historic Captain Cook landing site, making it straightforward to extend the playground visit into a full day outing combining adventure play, beach time, and a nature walk through Australian coastal bushland.

Facilities include a large car park with designated accessible parking spaces and plenty of spots available on most days. Four gender-neutral toilets with a wash basin and one fully accessible toilet are provided on site, along with baby change facilities, covered picnic shelters, bench seating, and water bubblers. Cook @ Kurnell Cafe is roughly a one to two minute walk from the playground — a dog and kid-friendly cafe with generous outdoor seating areas that is perfect for refuelling the family with coffee and food after a big play session.

Bonna Point is the standout playground in the Sutherland Shire and genuinely worth the drive from across southern Sydney. The combination of the Sky-pods adventure equipment, the Shire's tallest slide, adjacent skate park, beautiful coastal setting, and nearby Silver Beach makes it a proper half-day family outing that children will remember.
