About Lyne Park
We visited Lyne Park Playground in Rose Bay on a clear autumn morning and our children were completely captivated before we even reached the gate — they could see the spectacular flying boat structure from the car park and were pulling us forward with excitement. The playground was completely rebuilt in stages through 2024, with Stage A opening in August and the custom flying boat installed in November 2024, funded by the NSW Places to Play program, the Metropolitan Greenspace Program, and the Australian Government's Investing in our Communities Program alongside Woollahra Council. It is now one of the finest fenced harbourside playgrounds in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs.
The centrepiece is a custom-designed flying boat climbing structure — a creative nod to the historic Rose Bay International Airport where flying boats operated international services from the 1930s through to the 1970s. Children climb through the fuselage, slide down from the wings, and swing from elements integrated into the structure. It is a genuinely unique and imaginative piece of equipment that connects the playground to the area's rich aviation heritage in a way children can physically experience and learn from. You can watch actual Sydney Seaplanes take off and land on the harbour while your children play — our kids were mesmerised every single time a seaplane glided past, pointing and cheering as the aircraft lifted off the water. This is an experience you simply cannot replicate at any other playground in Sydney.
A double flying fox provides excitement and speed for older children who want aerial thrills. The four-bay swing set features seven different types of swings catering to every age and ability — from secure toddler bucket seats and accessible harness swings through to standard swings for older children. An orbit carousel spins multiple children at once, generating the delighted shrieks that are the soundtrack of every truly great playground. Sensory play areas with textured panels and sound elements add tactile variety, while a dedicated sensory walkway offers interactive experiences for children of all abilities. A water play zone provides cooling fun during warmer months, adding yet another dimension to an already comprehensive play offering.
The playground is fully fenced and gated — a significant advantage for parents of toddlers and young children in this harbourside location where water is nearby. The fence provides secure boundaries while the transparent design maintains the stunning harbour views from inside the playground, so parents sitting on benches can enjoy the scenery while their children play safely within the enclosure. The space is large enough that it never feels cramped, even on busy weekend mornings when Eastern Suburbs families descend in numbers.
Clean public toilets with an accessible toilet and baby change facilities are located adjacent to the playground entrance. Several cafes operate within or adjacent to Lyne Park, making it wonderfully easy to combine a playground visit with a coffee or leisurely brunch while the children burn off energy. Public tennis courts, open playing fields, and basketball courts provide additional activities for older children and teenagers who have outgrown the playground equipment or want more space.
Parking is available in two car parks off New South Head Road but fills fast on weekends, particularly during the warmer summer months — we strongly recommend arriving before 9am on Saturdays and Sundays to secure a spot. Bus routes along New South Head Road stop directly at the park for families who prefer to skip the parking hunt entirely. The Rose Bay ferry wharf is a short and pleasant walk away, offering a scenic harbour arrival that turns the journey itself into part of the day's adventure.
Lyne Park is best suited to families with children aged 1 to 8. The secure fenced design, harbour views, excellent variety of swings, and the truly unique seaplane-themed flying boat equipment make it a standout playground in the Eastern Suburbs and genuinely worth a visit from across Sydney.
