About The Ribbon Playground

Opened in 2024 as part of Darling Harbour's massive waterfront transformation, The Ribbon Playground is Sydney's newest destination playground and it immediately set the bar incredibly high. Winning the prestigious IFLA Award in 2025, this maritime-inspired play space weaves through the harbour precinct like a curving ribbon — the design is genuinely architectural, not just playground equipment plonked on rubber matting.

The theming is inspired by Sydney's maritime heritage, with nautical rope structures, wave-shaped climbing elements, and play equipment that evokes ships and the harbour. There are multiple distinct zones connected by winding pathways, each targeting different age groups and play styles. The highlight for many kids is the interconnected climbing and balancing structures that flow organically through the space. Younger children have their own dedicated zones with age-appropriate equipment at ground level.

Being brand new, everything is in pristine condition and the accessibility features are state-of-the-art — this was designed to current universal access standards from the ground up. The ground surfaces are a mix of soft-fall and natural materials. Shade structures are integrated into the design, though some areas get full afternoon sun.

You're in prime Darling Harbour territory, so food options are everywhere. The ICC and surrounding restaurants are steps away. Toilets are available in adjacent buildings. For transport, Town Hall station or the Pyrmont Bay light rail stop are both about an 8-minute walk. If you're driving, use the Harbourside or ICC car parks. This playground is a must-visit for anyone who hasn't seen it yet — the design quality is on another level entirely.
