A good face painter is the single best investment you can make for a kids' birthday party under age 8. Forget elaborate decorations and themed food — give a room full of 5-year-olds a face painter and they're entertained for the entire party. We've hired face painters for our last four birthday parties and every single time, the face painting queue has been the main event.

Sydney face painters typically charge $150-$250 per hour, with most parties requiring 1.5-2 hours depending on the number of children. At roughly 8-12 faces per hour (depending on design complexity), a 2-hour booking covers 16-24 children comfortably. Some artists charge per face instead — approximately $15-$20 per face, which works out similarly but gives you more predictable pricing if you know your guest count.

The quality difference between a cheap face painter and a skilled professional is enormous. A good artist uses professional-grade, hypoallergenic paints (FDA-approved brands like Snazaroo, Global Colours, or Diamond FX), creates designs that last 4-6 hours without smearing, and can handle a queue of impatient children with cheerful efficiency. A bad one uses craft paints that irritate skin, creates designs that look nothing like the photo, and sends half the party home crying.

Always check the artist's portfolio on Instagram or their website before booking — photos of actual work at actual parties, not just studio shots. Ask about their paint brands (hypoallergenic and FDA/TGA-approved is non-negotiable), whether they carry their own setup (table, chair, mirror, lighting), and their policy if they're unwell on the day.
